Feeling Hoarse? Go Suck a Zube.

I've been on a mission, and am sad to say that it has not been accomplished. I'd heard about these throat lozenges called Zubes and managed to find a website that sells them. Success, you might say, but no.

The original packaging had the slogan, "Feeling Hoarse? Go Suck a Zube." The idea of finding a photo of the old package just tickles me because, well, I mean come on! Go suck a Zube! How fucking funny is that? Hee. Anyway, the website states, "For relief from sore throat, cough and cold symptoms, suck Zubes medicated lozenges." That makes me giggle a little bit, but it's nothing knee slapping or anything.

If any of you all EVER come across a picture of Zubes lozenges with the old packaging, you have to PROMISE that you'll pass a photo along to me. In return for your kindness I will, ummm, relieve your sore throat! Hah! Perfect.

Thank you.

heh, go suck a zube. that sounds really perverted in my dirty little mind. Even if I had no idea that there was any one in the world named zube, that would sound bad. But in a completely different way.

Did you go after them for royalties? Because, y'know, you are ENTITLED.

That's too cool. I am JEALOUS, but Go Suck a Bonanza doesn't have the same ring to it.

Storm- Hee. I want to get some 'Zube' cough drops, so that when Zube Boy asks me what's for dinner, I can hand him a little bag of cough drops that say 'Go Suck a Zube'.

It's what's for dinner, bitch.

Bonanza Jellybean- Oh, I don't know, 'Go Suck a Bonanza' kind of sounds like 'Go Suck a Banana' which, well, is just cool.

Too funny! Of course, for the rest of us with other names, we'd be tempted to Photoshop a "P" over the "Z." Well, those of us with a very sophisticated sense of humor, anyway ;-)

I really enjoy reading yor blog. It almost always leaves me with a smile.

Except for your serious posts.

Your serious posts leave me with a lot of respect for you and your attitude on life.

Suzi- Hee. Okay, so 'Go Suck a Pube' would be pretty fucking funny.

Shrinking Wop- Wow. Thank you for the compliment. I'm speechless (and we all know how rare of a moment that is for me). :-)

I posted a comment but I don't know what happened to it. I said I would BUY these JUST for the pleasure of sending them to you. Do you know, is it a foreign product?

Zube said...

Junebee- You would ROCK if you found those (of course, you already do rock, but anyway.)!

And, yesterday, I checked my blog and it said I had more comments than I could see, so I totally thought one was missing. It was weird. It actually happened on the post below, too. Hmm.

Yes, I can make a comment about that. My grandfather Fredrick William Hampshire invented Zubes. He was a chemist and had a factory at the Old Silk Mill in Derby (UK). It burnt down in 1910 (you can check that in Wikipedia) and this was known as the 'Great Fire of Derby' in the newspapers of the time. It was subsequently rebuilt and is now Derby Industrial Museum.
But more to the point I remember the ad very well indeed. It was a drawing of a horse with a scarf around it's neck and maybe a sore-looking nose (can't quite remember but signs of a cold) and it read 'Hoarse, Go suck a Zube!'.
I don't have a copy of the image, sadly, but I remember it very well. Let me know if you find one.
He also invented Snowfire and Loxene Shampoo and Supersoft Shampoo.

My mother came from Iraq to England in 1958, when the "Go suck a Zube" advert was in its prime. It made her laugh. In Arabic a zube means a man's .... I am sure that you can guess, if not Google for "Arabaic Zube".

Anyway, that's not why I wrote this comment. I saw some Zube adverts on the Internet with a picture of the original tin.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r215/JimRae/OtherAlbum/Zube.jpg

The picture comes from a page on old adverts, but be warned, it is full of pictures and it takes ages to open. It even slowed down my computer while it was loading.

To save you the trouble of loading that page, the only comment on the Zube advert is quoted below.

"Here's a nice example of a Zubes tin. Too bad it's not in colour. I was trying to remember...
I think it was Pale Orange , and Tan , and had a splash of Red in the middle.
I think..."

There is also a link to another old Zube advert on Google, but the link to the image is not working at the moment.

In Google images, search for "zube lozenge", which should show up the thumbnail image on Google. Perhaps the link will work later on.

I thought that these pictures may amuse you. If not, they tickled my fancy!

P.S. I found a photo of the original tin on eBay!

And it seems that some people still sell Zubes.

Er..actually William Lander invented Zubes (and snowfire). He was my great grandfather and worked for F.W.Hampshire. I have just been on the blower to my dad who says that he and his sister used to play with the black and red horse that was used as inspiration for the advertising. He says that it was one of those small floppy toy horses that sits in a pedestal and collapses when you pressed the base upwards. small world!

The Zube billboard ad I remember (and loved) depicted a little horse sucking a Zube with the caption "Are you a little hoarse? Go suck a Zube"

Interesting story you got here. It would be great to read more about that theme. Thanks for posting that info.
